Laboratory at Federal Medical Centre in Ondo, Nigeria

Q: Can you introduce us to your lab and its team?

A: Our laboratory at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Ondo State is an integral part of our healthcare services. We have a dedicated team of 18 professionals working tirelessly to provide accurate and timely diagnostic services. The lab is directed by Mrs. Adeola Susan, and I serve as the Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Head of Department (HOD).

Q: What role does your lab play within the healthcare system?

A: Our lab plays a crucial role within the healthcare system by offering essential diagnostic testing for a 500-bed hospital. We serve not only Ondo State but also three neighboring states, covering a patient population of over 2 million residents. On average, we handle approximately 900 tests monthly, ensuring that our community receives the best possible medical care.

Q: What are some accomplishments your lab is proud of?

A: We are particularly proud of our ongoing efforts to digitize our laboratory processes. This initiative aims to enhance service delivery efficiency and keep pace with the increasing demands of our patient population. Although we are not yet accredited, we are diligently working towards achieving this important milestone.

Q: What challenges does your lab face?

A: Some of the main obstacles we face include:

Funding: Inadequate funding limits our ability to procure necessary reagents and update equipment.

Manual Processes: Many of our laboratory processes are still manual, leading to inefficiencies and delays.

Power Supply: Unreliable power supply is a significant hindrance to our operations.

Equipment: Our equipment is outdated, requiring frequent maintenance and causing occasional service disruptions.

Additionally, we recognize the need for continuous training for our staff to stay abreast of the latest advancements in laboratory science. We are in the process of establishing a continuous training program to address this need.

Q: What are your future plans for the lab?

A: Looking ahead, we have several exciting plans for our laboratory. Our goal is to implement a Laboratory Information System (LIS) to streamline our operations and improve data management. Additionally, we plan to undertake a comprehensive renovation of our laboratories in 2025 to modernize our facilities and enhance the quality of care we provide.
