Pathologists Overseas has been working for over 30 years to provide affordable, sustainable, and high-quality pathology and laboratory medicine (PALM) services. We work in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to address low quality diagnostic services through strategic partnerships and volunteers.  

Based on extensive fieldwork, we have learned that in most instances what is needed are improvements in systems rather than procurement of new instruments as many laboratories have the instruments they need to function appropriately. Areas we frequently address include quality assurance processes, laboratory information system (LIS) issues, reagent procurement systems, and continuing professional development.  

PO aims to target the 3 pillars of PALM quality: human resources, systems, and quality and accreditation. PO improves human resources by providing virtual continuing education to pathologists and laboratory professionals in these countries. To improve systems, we provide laboratory information system installation (LIS) and implementation support. Lastly, to improve quality and help laboratories progress toward accreditation, we support an external quality assurance program for laboratories in LMICs.
